Review of February Meeting

Meeting ReviewBy Lisa Settle

Despite the freezing temperatures and icy winds we managed to turn out last Wednesday for ourfirst Women in Business meeting of 2012.

We were welcomed by our new Chairwoman, Sian Murphy, who was keen to get us settled and tellus about her plans for the group. After some quick hellos and introductions the meeting began.

First on the agenda was to give thanks to our former Chairwoman, Sarah Christie. Sarah has beena brilliant Chairwoman and an inspiration to us all. She has organised some wonderful meetingsfor us and arranged many interesting and knowledgeable speakers. Sarah will be missed by us all;we sincerely hope that she stays in touch. More thanks went to Christine Richmond who has beentreasurer for the last six years. What dedication! Time for a well earned rest Christine. Julie Angell has kindly taken on the role.

Sian went on to announce how she sees the way ahead. Her aims include increasing our groupnumbers, to acknowledge the different needs of the group and cater for all, create a committee andto help us to grow our businesses. There is no doubt about the level of Sian’s commitment, throw in her business acumen and desire to succeed and we really do have an exciting path ahead.

Our speaker was our very own WiB member Andrea Beadle.

Andrea addressed us on the subjectof our uniqueness. Andrea explained that everything we have done so far has been part of a puzzle and the key to our success is pulling all the pieces together in order to identify our unique qualities. We were intrigued as Andrea led us through a series of questions in order to help us findour individual skills that link us to our business.

It was amazing to see how dissecting our lives into bite sized pieces could actually bring so much clarity. Andrea talked us through her personal journey showing how life can change without having to take drastic measures. You can read more about the process that Andrea took us through in an article Andrea wrote about her presentation: Being unique in Business to stand out from the crowd.

As I was frantically trying to capture all this in my notebook, because let’s face it this was valuable stuff, it occurred to me just how beneficial Women in Business has been to me. I think it’s going to be a fabulous year.

Firewalk for Charity by our very own Grace Kelly

Firewalk in aid of Ellenor LionsOur very own Grace Kelly is planning to take part in a firewalk for charity in aid of the Ellenor Lions Hospices.

Grace carries out a great deal of charity work and so in addition to being a very caring soul, we all think she is an incredibly brave one!

You can find out more about the challenge by clicking on the link to the right.

Family, friends and colleagues are welcome to come along to watch Grace face this incredible challenge. There will be a barbeque and lots to see and do to keep everyone entertained whilst Grace prepares for her walk.

And we hope that you will all sponsor Grace! (link coming soon!)

And just in case anyone is doubting the enormity of the challenge that Grace is taking on, here is a you-tube video of a recent event.

Embrace new technology, but don’t reject good old-fashioned PR

embrace the mediaThere’s no doubt that websites, social networking and face-to-face networking are extremely valuable in promoting a modern business, and I am the first to advocate them as the way forward for my clients.

But as we get swept up in the enthusiasm for new media, let’s not forget the benefits of good old-fashioned PR – getting your company and brands in the press, on radio and TV.

When you’re busy running your own business, you may not take the time to think of aspects of your business day which make interesting editorials .

An effective PR consultant gets to know what makes your business tick and has regular contact with journalists, so can suggest relevant and topical themes which are likely to appeal to journalists and their audiences.  It may be that you or your employees have just made a great deal of effort to raise money for a deserving charity; or there may be an aspect of your knowledge or experience which readers, listeners and viewers would love to learn about.

When you are featured, you’ll be amazed at the number of people who get in touch to say they’ve seen it.  It could be the reason you clinch that contract you’ve been negotiating for months.  Former clients you may have lost touch with are convinced to return.  People decide that you’re a significant employer they want to work for.  And, of course, you’ll attract the new clients you need to expand your company.

So, while I’m busy creating new websites for my clients and encouraging them to spend time networking, I’m also quick to point out the significant contribution that the ‘old’ media makes within a successful marketing mix.
