Review of February Meeting

Meeting ReviewBy Lisa Settle

Despite the freezing temperatures and icy winds we managed to turn out last Wednesday for ourfirst Women in Business meeting of 2012.

We were welcomed by our new Chairwoman, Sian Murphy, who was keen to get us settled and tellus about her plans for the group. After some quick hellos and introductions the meeting began.

First on the agenda was to give thanks to our former Chairwoman, Sarah Christie. Sarah has beena brilliant Chairwoman and an inspiration to us all. She has organised some wonderful meetingsfor us and arranged many interesting and knowledgeable speakers. Sarah will be missed by us all;we sincerely hope that she stays in touch. More thanks went to Christine Richmond who has beentreasurer for the last six years. What dedication! Time for a well earned rest Christine. Julie Angell has kindly taken on the role.

Sian went on to announce how she sees the way ahead. Her aims include increasing our groupnumbers, to acknowledge the different needs of the group and cater for all, create a committee andto help us to grow our businesses. There is no doubt about the level of Sian’s commitment, throw in her business acumen and desire to succeed and we really do have an exciting path ahead.

Our speaker was our very own WiB member Andrea Beadle.

Andrea addressed us on the subjectof our uniqueness. Andrea explained that everything we have done so far has been part of a puzzle and the key to our success is pulling all the pieces together in order to identify our unique qualities. We were intrigued as Andrea led us through a series of questions in order to help us findour individual skills that link us to our business.

It was amazing to see how dissecting our lives into bite sized pieces could actually bring so much clarity. Andrea talked us through her personal journey showing how life can change without having to take drastic measures. You can read more about the process that Andrea took us through in an article Andrea wrote about her presentation: Being unique in Business to stand out from the crowd.

As I was frantically trying to capture all this in my notebook, because let’s face it this was valuable stuff, it occurred to me just how beneficial Women in Business has been to me. I think it’s going to be a fabulous year.

New Chairwoman

Sian Murphy, Women in Business New ChairI am gutted, but unfortunately I cannot attend what would have been my last meeting as your Chairwoman, as I am working in Europe all that week.

But it gives me great pleasure to tell you that Sian Murphy has volunteered to be your next Chair and as she can attend the meeting, she will assume the role with immediate effect!

Amongst other things, Sian will be inviting you to consider the option of creating a committee, something we had discussed before.

I hope you join me in giving Sian a warm welcome. I know she will make a terrific Chairwoman and although I am sad to say goodbye to you all, knowing that WiB is in safe hands makes me feel a little better!

I’d like to take this opportunity to say a fond farewell to you all. You ladies rock and it has been a real pleasure for me to get to know you and to lead WiB for the past 2 years. I wish you all much love – I will miss you – and much success in your businesses for 2012.

Thank You

I want to say a BIG thank you to the wonderful Christine Richmond who has been dedicated to WiB and its success for the past 6 years. She’s done a fabulous job as our Treasurer and, along with Kirsten Gibbs, has given me loads of support during my tenure as your Chairwoman. I really do appreciate all that Christine has done and I wish her a happy retirement from the Treasurer role!

February Meeting – Being Unique in Business to stand out from the crowd

Being unique in business to stand out from the crowd

Did you fall into your line of business with no real consideration about whether it was right for you?

Have you ever questioned whether there is something that you could tweak to make it even better?

Perhaps there are a number of separate parts to your business and you feel torn between them; your efforts seem scattered which impacts on your overall success?

Or maybe there are skills, passions and talents that you don’t get to use in your business that leaves you wondering sometimes whether your talents are wasted?

Our very own WiB member, Andrea Beadle, talks to us about how we are all unique, and how everything we have done in the past can serve a purpose in our business.  When we see how the work we love combined with our skills, talents and passions come together it can be a revelation.

Focussing on the skill set we have as well as how we are designed to help others can have a significant impact on our success.

Andrea will talk to you about the process that she uses with her clients to get real clarity about the work that they are here to do. I can certainly vouch for Andrea’s methods. When I was overwhelmed with too many options, Andrea really helped me pull the main threads together and helped me focus on the key products that I offered. She also helped me realise what I had to eliminate, to reduce my confusion and what a relief that was!

I highly recommend Andrea and her talk – what a way to start our WiB year!

Thank you from Jane Dickson – Retiring Member

Thank you all for giving me such a send-off earlier this month. I was quite overwhelmed by the whole evening and had no idea I had made such an impression on so many members.

Jane Dickson Retires from Women in BusinessThe flowers were absolutely beautiful and I only sent the last remnants to the compost heap earlier this week. I will take the cards with me, as well as the other gifts.Forgive the ‘group’ thanks, but I am fast running out of time and fear I will never get round to thanking the individual members.

One tip – closing a business and retiring is quite stressful without also selling a house and moving elsewhere. Fortunately, I am receiving help and support from unexpected people, which is wonderful. I think I will make it!

Review of August Meeting

When our guest speaker Christine Le Penuizic gave us a little challenge last night at our monthly Women in Business meeting, I’m not sure she quite expected the sudden explosion of confabulation.  In fact it was rather difficult to shut us up.

Christine came along to our meeting to enlighten us in the art of public speaking and to guide us into giving the ‘perfect pitch’.

We discussed what aspects we find agreeable and also what aspects we find off putting when listening to others introductions.  It’s all very easy pointing out what works for us but translating that to ensure our own pitch is perfect, is not so straight forward.  Christine gave us some examples; one relating to a financial advisor.  Instead of saying “I’m a financial advisor” an improvement would be “I help people to manage their wealth and prepare for a secure future”.

We moved on to drafting our own introductions with tips from Christine to describe what we do and how it benefits the person using our service. Once we had our masterpieces in hand we practised on each other, amending our efforts along the way. My personal attempt certainly started off alright but then I came up with more features than benefits and kind of lost my way. The rest of the group soon put me right.

The resulting feedback was fabulous, as well as being priceless; that is the wonderful thing about Women in Business, the support is amazing.

As usual the clock had the audacity to keep ticking and we ran out of time, most of us reluctant to cease the discussion.

Fortunately nothing was written in stone last night and we are able to continue working on our spiel; but one thing is for sure, Christine has certainly sown a seed, I think I can still hear the cogs turning.

August Meeting

Designing your elevator speechI’m delighted to announce that a good friend and colleague of mine, Christine Le Penuizic, will be coming along to help us generate new ideas for an innovative, confident and impactful elevator speech. I know that I am often reduced to a babbling mess when someone asks me what I do, so this will be perfect for me to be able to communicate what I do in a more succinct and articulate manner!

Christine is an experienced trainer and coach specialising in communication and presentation skills. I have attended one of her courses and she is brilliant at what she does. She also owns her own company, Athenoya.

Christine is originally from a corporate background with 20 years working for blue chip organisations and brings a French flair to the art of presenting and public speaking. Her training focuses on providing participants with practical tools, advice and individual feedback to help them take their presentation and public speaking skills to the next level, whatever their experience.  I’m sure you’ll agree, this is a meeting you can’t afford to miss. It’s these kind of things that make all the difference – how we come across and whether we can “sell ourselves”.

July Meeting – Market your business online

Market your business onlineI’m delighted to tell you that one of our newest members, Zoe Cairns, is going to be our guest speaker for the evening. She comes highly recommended, so I am really looking forward to hearing her.

For those of you who don’t know Zoe, she is known as “Social Media Trainer, Consultant & Speaker” and will show you how to market your business online and generate free traffic.  Many business owners are already using social media sites to promote their business but very few know how to maximise the effectiveness of them. Zoe will demonstrate how to fully exploit the capabilities of these forums. In other words, you will learn invaluable methods of promoting your business and generating sales at no cost.

She will show you automation tools, twitter tools and lots of different strategies, tips and techniques on how you can create your presence online and build your brand awareness on the internet.  Zoe has many ways in which she will show you how to drive more traffic to your websites and blogs! I know we focus on this quite a lot, but it really is the way of the future and the more familiar we can become with these tools, the more advantages we give ourselves.

Based in Kent, Zoe is in constant demand for her knowledge, at a range of top business events so we are very lucky to have her speak at our meeting. Don’t miss out! Come and hear Zoe’s fantastic advice and tips for business success.
